The telecommunications industry and appliance retail in South Africa

Telecom revenues are beginning to slow in South Africa and there are fears that weak economic growth will affect consumer spending, including on mobile devices.

Data demand has returned to pre-pandemic growth levels, which experts attribute to the return to the office or hybrid working. As traditional voice and data revenues slow, telecom companies are investing in services such as fintech to boost revenue. Operators continue to invest heavily in fiber and the deployment of 5G mobile networks.

Telephony and Internet

There are over 100 million mobile subscriptions in the country. As this includes machine-to-machine connections and entities with multiple subscriptions, mobile penetration per capita is likely to be much lower.

The percentage of households with a landline fell to less than 10% in 2020, and the widespread use of mobile phones means that less than 2% of households have no access to any type of phone. The number of smartphone subscriptions continues to grow.

Capex 5G and Fiber

5G rollout has continued since Vodacom and MTN launched 5G in 2020, and industry players expect the number of base stations to double in the next decade. Fiber rollout accelerated in 2021 as demand for high-speed internet increased, and carriers extended fiber to outlying areas and townships.

Challenges for fiber companies include access to capital, speed of deployment and paperwork to obtain municipal approval, quality of fiber service offered, and customer service.
